Joint Chamber Mixer, July '06 PDF Print

Wow. This is easily the biggest mixer I've been to whilst in Shanghai. At least it seemed that way, maybe because it was held it in the ballroom of the Regent Hotel, which allowed me to get an overview of just how many people show up to these events.

Admission was the usual 150 RMB including a couple of drinks and canapes -- no surprise there. Being an avid networker, all night long I was glimpsing familiar faces and ended up socialising as much as networking with new faces. The sheer number of people was a little overwhelming at first, not to mention crowding. Things eased up later in the night, making it easier to move around and meet people, rather than treading on peoples' toes.

The People

  • Positions: Lots of business development, directors, managers, consultants and marketers. One or two media types, a couple of trainers
  • Industries: A lot of real estate, travel, technology, finance and HR people, plus a few training and relocation companies.
  • Ages (approx): Mostly in twenties and thirties, though some in 40s and older.
  • Nationalities: Lots of locals and Americans, quite a few British and other Europeans. Other Asians were present, like Singapore and Japan.

Food and Drink

Food was diverse and pretty good on the whole, though the drinks tables were laid out all over the place, with some offering spirits, some beer and some wine, making it a journey to actually get what you wanted.

Cards Collected: 35
