City Weekend Book Club

Sun 13 Jul 2008      4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Do I need to register to become a book club member?

There is no need to register. You only have to show up for the book club meeting to join.

Do I need to pay for anything?

Aside from purchasing your book, just your own coffee and/or meal during the meeting. Any coffee drink ordered while participating in the meeting will be given a 10% discount.

So where do I get the book?

This month's read is now readily available at Figaro. This book is made available by Blue Fontaine.

What if I didn't read the book?

It’s okay. You can still join. You are not required to read or finish the book. It would just be nice if you were able to read it, but it’s not a requirement as we often end up discussing issues and topics that relate to the book. We're not grading you for it! (You can also cheat a bit sometimes with our pre-meeting movie nights.).

Are the meetings very serious?

Definitely not--it’s a very fun group. We just like reading books. And chit-chat. And coffee.

When are the meetings?

Meetings are held every second Sunday of the month. Meeting date may change due to holiday schedules or special author appearances and the like but we will keep you guys informed through this blog, the e-group and Figaro's bulletin board. Meetings are always on a Sunday at 4pm.

Where are meetings held?

"Book clubbers" meet up at Figaro Coffee Company. Figaro is right across Xintiandi. Head straight up to the second floor and you'll find specially reserved sofas just for the Book Club!

So exactly what happens?

Peggy Rosen, our Book Club moderator, often starts off meetings by asking how people found the book. She then guides the discussion along by citing reviews and asking if the we agree or not and by raising questions about characters, plot twists and such. Just to get the ball rolling, really. Discussions can go from the book to other related topics so each meeting is always a surprise. And once again, it's not as serious as it sounds!
